Machinery presses for forming and assembly
Machinery presses join and form metal with force rather than by cutting chips. A ram drives the workpiece against a die or a fixture. Shops run them for press fitting, straightening, bending and coining. KNUTH stocks two press families. One is built for the maintenance shop, the other for repeat production work.
What KNUTH stocks: hydraulic presses and shop presses
The category covers two groups, and both are listed in the product cards above:
- Industrial hydraulic presses: built for production tasks that call for more tonnage. Hydraulic pressure stays constant, so full force is on tap anywhere in the stroke.
- Workshop presses: the classic shop press for repair, assembly and teardown. Hand pump models need no power hookup. Motor driven units speed up work that repeats.
KNUTH does not carry mechanical production presses, and no servo, transfer or deep drawing lines either.
Hydraulic versus mechanical presses
A mechanical press runs on a crank or a toggle linkage. Stroke rates are high, which suits a long production run on one part. Full tonnage only arrives near the bottom of the stroke.
A hydraulic press trades speed for control. Force is available anywhere in the stroke, and the operator sets stroke length and final pressure. That flexibility is what a job shop needs when the part changes every week. KNUTH covers the hydraulic side of the market only.
H-frame and C-frame press designs
Frame design drives access and rigidity:
- H-frame press: a closed four post frame. It carries higher loads and deflects less, which is what straightening heavy stock calls for.
- C-frame press: open on three sides. Parts slide in from the front or the side and changeover is fast. This is the layout for press fitting and light assembly.
Manual, air over hydraulic and motor driven presses
A hand pump press builds pressure with a lever. Nothing to plug in, little to maintain, and it fits a mobile service bay. Air over hydraulic units use shop air to drive the pump, which cuts the effort on repeat cycles. Motor driven presses generate the pressure themselves and take the load off the operator. A gauge reads out the applied pressure, and adjustable stops repeat the same result part after part.
What a press does on the shop floor
- Press fitting bearings, bushings, sleeves and pins in and out
- Straightening bent shafts, axles and structural stock
- Bending small sheet parts and flat bar
- Coining and punching with dedicated press tooling
- Teardown and rebuild work in maintenance and fleet service
Sheet metal in plate format belongs on a press brake, not on a shop press.
Industries that run a press
Maintenance departments are the largest group by far. A press replaces the hammer and puller routine and keeps the repair in house. Automotive and fleet shops pull and set bearings, bushings and ball joints every day. Energy and utility shops straighten shafts and rebuild rotating equipment. Fabricators and machine builders reach for the press for straightening and for light forming. On assembly benches it holds the joining force steady across a run.
Press tooling and accessories
Tooling is what makes a press earn its floor space. The common items are:
- Press pins and mandrels in stepped diameters for bushings, bearings and pins
- V-blocks that support round stock while it is straightened
- Bolster and support plates to spread force across thin walled parts
- Punch and die sets for repeat coining and punching
- Bending attachments for light work on flat bar

Sizing a machinery press
Start with four questions. How much force does the heaviest part need? How often does the job repeat? How big is the workpiece and how does it get loaded? Is shop power available at the bench?
Three figures then let you compare machines. Tonnage is matched to the heaviest job, never to the average one. Stroke sets how far the ram travels and how tall a part can be.
