Presses are sorted by drive and by frame. On the drive side, hydraulic presses stand against mechanical types such as eccentric and toggle presses. A hydraulic press keeps full force available anywhere in the stroke, and the operator sets stroke length and final pressure. That suits a shop where the part changes often. A mechanical press runs on a crank or toggle linkage. It hits higher stroke rates and belongs on a long run of one part.

The shop press is built for repair, assembly and teardown, and many models run on a hand pump. The industrial hydraulic press delivers more tonnage and is built for work that repeats every shift. Tonnage, frequency and part size decide which one fits.

The C-frame is open on three sides, so parts load from the front or the side and changeover is fast. The H-frame is a closed four post design. It carries higher tonnage and deflects less, which is what heavy straightening work needs.

Hydraulic versus mechanical presses

A mechanical press runs on a crank or a toggle linkage. Stroke rates are high, which suits a long production run on one part. Full tonnage only arrives near the bottom of the stroke.

A hydraulic press trades speed for control. Force is available anywhere in the stroke, and the operator sets stroke length and final pressure. That flexibility is what a job shop needs when the part changes every week. KNUTH covers the hydraulic side of the market only.

Manual, air over hydraulic and motor driven presses

A hand pump press builds pressure with a lever. Nothing to plug in, little to maintain, and it fits a mobile service bay. Air over hydraulic units use shop air to drive the pump, which cuts the effort on repeat cycles. Motor driven presses generate the pressure themselves and take the load off the operator. A gauge reads out the applied pressure, and adjustable stops repeat the same result part after part.
