What a folding machine does in a fab shop
A folding machine, also called a swing-beam folder, is one of the core machines for bending sheet metal. Unlike a press brake, there is no punch and die; a folding beam clamps the blank and swings it up around a fixed edge to raise the flange. The method is simple, it keeps the sheet surface clean, and setup and bend times stay short. That is how flashings, hems, seams and multi-bend parts get made for roofing and cladding, HVAC and general sheet metal work. How a folding machine works
A folding machine is built around three beams. The lower beam carries the blank, the clamping beam holds it down on the bend line, and the folding beam swings up to form the flange. Most work is free bending:
- Load and set the stop: the blank sits on the lower beam against the back gauge.
- Clamp: the clamping beam locks the blank right on the bend line.
- Fold: the folding beam swings up and bends the blank to the target angle.
Because the clamping beam only holds and does not press, finished surfaces stay unmarked. The operator dials in repeatable flanges with the stop and the fold angle. For hems, meaning edges folded tightly back on themselves, and for pans, segmented tooling does the job.
Types and versions
Folding machines differ mainly in the drive and in how they fold:
- Manual folding machine: clamping and folding are done by hand. Rugged, simple and cost-effective for one-off parts, repairs and the shop.
- Motorized and hydraulic folding machine: a drive handles the clamping and folding, which takes the load off the operator and speeds up repeat bends.
- CNC folding machine: the control drives the back gauge, fold angle and bend sequence from a program, holding repeatability on complex parts and higher volume.
- Double bender (up-and-down folding machine): the folding beam bends both up and down, so the blank never has to be flipped. That cuts a lot of time on parts with opposing flanges.

Folding machine vs. press brake: which one to buy
Both machines bend sheet metal, but they work differently, and that drives the pick:
- Folding machine: a folding beam swings the clamped blank up. Strong on long edges, light to medium gauge, hems and clean handling of finished surfaces. No tool change to switch angles.
- Press brake: a punch drives the blank into a bottom die. Strong on heavy gauge, high tonnage and tool-bound profiles. Details on the press brakes page.
Rule of thumb: long, clean edges and hems point to the folding machine; heavy gauge and tool-bound profiles point to the press brake. A double bender combines up and down folding in one machine and is the flexible pick for changing parts.
Capacity and machine sizes
Two numbers steer the pick. Working length has to cover your longest edge, and bending capacity has to cover the mix of gauge and alloy. Heavier gauge and longer edges call for a stronger machine. Add the adjustable back gauge for repeatable positioning, fine adjustment of the fold angle, and segmented tooling for pans and hems.
