A press shapes or joins metal with pressure and does not remove any chips. A ram pushes the workpiece against a die or a fixture. Typical jobs are straightening, bending and coining, as well as pressing bearings, bushings and pins in and out.

Presses are grouped by drive and by frame design. On the drive side, hydraulic presses stand against mechanical types such as eccentric and toggle presses. On the frame side, the open C-frame and the closed H-frame are the two basic forms. KNUTH supplies hydraulic presses and workshop presses in both frame designs.

A hydraulic press holds the press force constant over the whole stroke. Stroke and final pressure are freely adjustable, which makes it flexible when parts change. A mechanical press runs on a crank or lever drive. It reaches higher stroke rates and suits series production with one repeating part.

The workshop press is built for maintenance, assembly and repair, and it is often hand operated. The hydraulic press for production applies more force and is designed for work that repeats. Which one fits depends on the force needed, the frequency of the job and the size of the parts.

The C-frame is open on three sides. Workpieces load from the side, awkward parts included, and the changeover is quick. The H-frame is closed, absorbs higher forces and deflects less under load. It is the better choice for heavy straightening work.

The deciding factors are force, workpiece size, how often the job comes up and the available power supply. For occasional assembly and repair work a hand operated workshop press is enough. The most common are pressing bearings, bushings, rubber mounts and pins in and out, plus straightening distorted shafts and sections. Bending and folding smaller sheet parts and flat bar are added to that. With matching press tooling, coining and punching are possible as well. For sheet in plate format a press brake is the right machine.

Hydraulic or mechanical: the difference in practice

Mechanical presses such as eccentric or toggle presses run on a crank or lever drive. They reach high stroke rates and pay off in series production with one repeating part. Their full force only builds up close to the bottom of the stroke.

Hydraulic presses work more slowly. In exchange they hold the force across the whole stroke. Stroke and final pressure are freely adjustable, so the machine stays flexible when the parts change. For single pieces, small batches and maintenance work this is the more practical route. KNUTH serves this part of the market and does not supply mechanical production presses.

Drive and operation

Hand operated presses run on a hand pump and need no power supply. They are ready to work in minutes. Motor driven models take over the pressure generation and take noticeable strain off the operator. They make sense as soon as the same job comes up several times a day. A pressure gauge shows the applied pressure, and adjustable end stops keep the results the same across a batch.
