The deciding factors are tonnage, stroke and throat width, plus the frame design. Tonnage follows the heaviest job, not the most frequent one. Both are hydraulic presses with different frames. The C-frame press is open on three sides, so parts load from the front or the side and changeover is fast. The portal press has a closed four-column frame, often called the H-type. It carries higher tonnage, deflects less under load and guides the ram more precisely.

A pump builds pressure in a hydraulic fluid. The pressure acts on the ram in the hydraulic cylinder and turns into a high press force. How a hydraulic press works

A hydraulic press works on Pascal's principle. A pump builds pressure in a hydraulic fluid, the pressure acts evenly on the ram in the hydraulic cylinder and turns into a high press force. Because system pressure stays constant, force is available anywhere in the stroke, not only near the bottom. A gauge reads out the applied pressure, adjustable stops repeat the same result part after part, and safety devices protect the operator and the tooling. A hydraulic press is slower than a mechanical one, but stronger and easier to meter finely.
