Hydraulic presses for forming and production
Hydraulic presses form and join metal with force rather than by cutting chips. Unlike mechanical designs, full force is on tap across the whole stroke. Stroke and final pressure are freely adjustable, so the machine stays flexible when the part changes and runs reliably on a repeat job. Press designs: C-frame and portal presses
Frame design drives access, rigidity and force range:
- C-frame presses: open on three sides. Parts load from the front or the side, awkward pieces included. This layout suits press fitting and jobs with frequent part changes.
- Portal presses in a four-column frame: a closed frame, often called the H-type. It carries higher tonnage, deflects less under load and guides the ram precisely. That is what demanding forming and joining work calls for.

How a hydraulic press works
A hydraulic press works on Pascal's principle. A pump builds pressure in a hydraulic fluid, the pressure acts evenly on the ram in the hydraulic cylinder and turns into a high press force. Because system pressure stays constant, force is available anywhere in the stroke, not only near the bottom. A gauge reads out the applied pressure, adjustable stops repeat the same result part after part, and safety devices protect the operator and the tooling. A hydraulic press is slower than a mechanical one, but stronger and easier to meter finely.
Applications and industries
With the right tooling a hydraulic press handles a wide range of work:
- Press fitting bearings, bushings, sleeves and pins in and out
- Coining and punching with dedicated punch and die tooling
- Forming and light deep drawing of sheet and metal parts
- Straightening bent shafts, axles and structural stock
- Joining and assembly with a steady press force across a run
Typical fields are machine building, metalworking, automotive and fleet, plus energy and utility work. Sheet metal in plate format belongs on a press brake, not on a hydraulic press.
Control and automation
KNUTH hydraulic presses run automatically and are PLC-controlled, among others with a Siemens control. The operator panel sets the sequence, force and position and recalls them the same way every time. That takes the load off the operator, cuts the cycle time on repeat work and holds the result steady across a run. On one repeating part, the automatic sequence is the decisive edge over a hand-operated press.

Sizing a hydraulic press
Three figures let you compare machines. Tonnage is matched to the heaviest job, never to the average one. Stroke sets how far the ram travels and how tall a part can be. Throat width limits what fits between the uprights. Add the frame design, the repeat accuracy you need and the tooling and safety equipment. Machines are quality-tested in Germany against European testing standards before they ship, and the test documentation is available on request.
Press tooling and accessories
Tooling is what makes a hydraulic press earn its floor space. The common items are:
- Press pins and mandrels in stepped diameters for bushings, bearings and pins
- Bolster and support plates to spread force across thin walled parts
- Punch and die sets for repeat coining and punching
- V-blocks that support round stock while it is straightened
