Shops use press brakes for enclosures, cabinets, brackets and formed parts across job shops, machinery building and sheet metal fabrication.An NC press brake offers a good balance between manual operation and automation, making it ideal for medium-sized batch production where some automation is desired but the full functionality of a CNC machine is not necessary. It is generally more cost-effective and easier to operate, making it particularly attractive for smaller workshops. A CNC press brake offers greater precision, repeatability, and flexibility thanks to fully automated control systems. The blank sits on the die and the ram brings the punch down into the die opening. Most jobs run as air bending, where the punch only dips in far enough to hit the target angle. Go deeper and the angle closes up, so you can dial in any open angle without changing tooling.

On a conventional brake you set the back gauge and ram depth by hand, which is rugged and cost-effective for simple flanges and short runs. A CNC brake drives the back gauge, tonnage and bend angle from a program, cutting setup time and holding the angle part to part on complex work and higher volume.

Yes. Press brake, brake press and bending press are all names for the same machine, where a punch drives the blank into a bottom die. A folding machine is a different type: it clamps the blank and swings a beam up to raise the flange. For die bending with a punch and die, the press brake is the machine you want.

Under load the ram deflects a little, so the bend angle can come out different in the middle than at the ends. Crowning compensates for that deflection so the angle holds across the full length. On CNC brakes crowning is applied automatically, which keeps long bends consistent.

Start with working length, tonnage and control. Working length has to cover your longest flange, and tonnage has to cover the gauge and alloy you run.
