What a plate rolling machine does in a fab shop

A plate rolling machine, also called a bending roll, rolls flat sheet or plate between several rolls into a cylinder, a cone or an open curve. The process is called roll bending or plate rolling. The blank passes through the rolls several times and the radius tightens with each pass. That is how tubes, boiler shells, vessel bodies and curved parts get made without a seam around the circumference.

How three-roll technology works

KNUTH plate rolling machines run three rolls. Two driven rolls feed the blank, and the third roll sets the radius by how far it presses in. The roll drive is motorized, so the blank runs through evenly and the curve holds repeatable over the full length.

• Pre-bending: the leading edge is bent before rolling, so there is no flat remnant left at the end.
• Symmetric and asymmetric: on a symmetric build the rolls sit evenly, while asymmetric adjustment makes tighter radii and pre-bending easier to reach.

Which sheet and materials can be rolled?

The usual sheet and plate materials run on a plate rolling machine: mild steel, stainless, aluminum, copper and zinc. The range goes from light sheet through to heavier plate and flat bar. Plate thickness and working width drive the machine pick. The heavier the plate and the wider the sheet, the larger the machine has to be.
