A vertical bandsaw stands the blade up and runs it through a fixed table, and you move the work into the blade by hand. That is what makes it a contour saw rather than a cut-off machine. It cuts curves, radii and cutouts that a horizontal bandsaw cannot, because the horizontal saw is built to take bar and tube square to length.

Contour work: free shapes, radii and internal cutouts
The free cut is the whole point of a vertical bandsaw. The operator runs the part along the layout line into the blade and cuts curves and radii that no cut-off saw can hit. The tilting table takes it further into bevel and angle contours, since the work sits at an angle to the blade.
For a closed internal cutout the blade welder does the trick: thread the band through a drilled hole in the part, weld it back together and cut the inside contour, so you get openings and pockets without cutting in from the edge.
Materials and cutting capacity
These saws cut carbon steel, stainless, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys. For a clean cut the blade, the speed and the tooth pitch get matched to the alloy and the wall thickness. A soft, gummy alloy wants a different blade and speed than hardened steel.
On a vertical bandsaw the capacity is given as height by throat depth: the height is how thick the stock can be under the guide, and the throat depth is the reach from the blade to the column, which sets how deep you can cut.
