Fiber Laser Cutting Machines for Sheet Metal Fabrication
A fiber laser cutting machine cuts sheet metal with a focused beam instead of a tool. The beam melts a narrow kerf, and assist gas clears the melt out of the cut. Nothing touches the plate, so nothing wears. Small holes and tight radii come off the table ready to use. Shops also call these machines fiber laser cutting systems. Fiber Laser or CO2 Laser: Which Technology Fits
In metal, fiber has taken over from CO2. Wall plug efficiency is far better. Nothing is consumed to make the beam itself, and with no mirrors in the beam path there is less to align and less to replace. Fiber is also quicker through thin and medium material, and it handles copper and brass, which were treated as problem materials on CO2 machines. Fiber does not cut non-metals: wood, acrylic and textiles stay with CO2. Every KNUTH machine in this category runs a fiber source and is set up for metal.
Table Sizes and Power Classes
Sizing runs along two axes, table format and laser power. The line splits into four steps:
- Compact: a square table and a small floor footprint, built for job shops, prototype work, maintenance departments and short runs.
- Standard format, extendable table: the everyday plate size, with a motorized extendable table, gas console and filter unit.
- Shuttle table: same power range, second table added. One table gets unloaded and reloaded while the machine keeps cutting on the other.
- High power: top power ratings for heavy plate and tight cycle times, in the biggest table formats.

Materials, Material Thickness and Assist Gas
These machines are built for metal: mild steel, stainless and aluminum, with more alloys in reach depending on the machine and its power rating. Thin material and electrical steel are where fiber is strongest, since it moves fast and leaves little heat behind, so parts come off flat instead of warped. More laser power means more thickness capacity and less time per part. Three inputs drive the power class you need: the alloy, your heaviest material, and the edge quality your customer accepts. Assist gas belongs in the same math: oxygen keeps cost down on heavier mild steel, and nitrogen leaves an oxide free edge on stainless and aluminum.
CNC Control and Programming
A laser cutter has no manual version, it is a CNC machine from the ground up. The contouring control drives the head over the plate and trims feed rate, power, gas pressure and focus height together as the geometry changes. Programming happens in nesting software: you bring the geometry in from CAD, the software arranges parts on the sheet to hold scrap down, then posts the cutting program. Parameter sets for the usual material and thickness combinations are stored, so setup does not start with trial cuts. When people say CNC fiber laser cutting machine, this whole package is what they mean.
Automation: Shuttle Table, Loading and Fume Extraction
Cut time is usually not what limits output. Material handling is. That makes the shuttle table the first automation step worth paying for: one table is unloaded and reloaded while the beam is still running on the other. On the large format series it is standard equipment. Loading and unloading systems and tower storage go further, and whether the volume justifies them is a calculation we run with you. Cutting metal also generates smoke and fine particulate, and on the larger series an extraction and filter unit ships with the machine.
Applications and Industries
Fiber lasers show up anywhere flat stock turns into parts: contract manufacturing and sheet metal shops, machine builders, truck and trailer work, electrical enclosures, steel fabrication and medical device work.
