A fiber laser cutting machine cuts sheet metal with a focused beam. The beam melts a narrow kerf and assist gas clears the melt out of the cut. Since nothing touches the material, small holes, tight radii and detailed contours come off the table clean and to size. Shops use the process anywhere flat stock becomes a part: contract manufacturing, machine building, truck and trailer work, electrical enclosures and medical devices.

Nothing. The terms describe the same equipment. "Laser cutting system" usually means the complete installation with gas console and fume extraction, and "laser cutter" is shop shorthand for the same machine. Compare the specifications, not the labels.

Five things drive the answer: your largest plate size, your heaviest material, the alloys you run, parts per day, and the floor space and electrical service you have available. For cut to size work, prototypes and maintenance, a compact machine covers it. If you run full size sheet daily, a shuttle table returns the most. For heavy plate and tight cycle times, you are in the high power class. We will walk your part mix with you and match the power rating to it.

In metal, fiber wins. Better wall plug efficiency, nothing consumed to make the beam, faster through thin and medium material, and no mirrors in the beam path to align or replace. CO2 keeps its place with non-metals, meaning wood, acrylic and textiles. Every KNUTH machine in this category runs a fiber source and is set up for metal only.

Mild steel, stainless and aluminum are the core, with more alloys in reach depending on the machine and its power rating. Thin material and electrical steel are where fiber is strongest, because it moves fast and leaves little heat behind, so parts stay flat. Thickness capacity climbs with laser power. Assist gas is part of the decision: oxygen keeps cost down on heavier mild steel, nitrogen leaves an oxide free edge on stainless and aluminum.

There is no manual version of this machine, it is CNC from the ground up. The contouring control drives the head and trims feed rate, power, gas pressure and focus height together as the geometry changes. Programming happens in nesting software: geometry comes in from CAD, the software arranges parts on the sheet to hold scrap down, then posts the cutting program. Parameter sets for common material and thickness combinations are already stored, so setup does not start with a round of trial cuts.

Start with the shuttle table. One table is unloaded and reloaded while the beam keeps running on the other, and that attacks material handling, which is what usually limits output rather than cut speed. On the large format series the shuttle table is standard, not an option. After that come loading and unloading systems and tower storage for lights out running. Whether the volume justifies it is a calculation we run with you.

Every machine is built and tested to European testing standards and inspected with documentation before it ships. We provide that documentation on request. Cutting metal generates smoke and fine particulate, so an extraction and filter unit ships with the larger series. Requirements that apply at your facility we go through with you during installation.

Look at total cost, not the sticker. Older used machines are often CO2, which means more power drawn, laser gas consumed and more work on the optics. Those operating costs tend to close the gap on a lower purchase price over the life of the machine. Parts availability and documentation are the other question mark on a used machine. The lead time on a laser cutting machine depends on machine size and configuration, and we state it bindingly in the quotation. Installation, commissioning and operator training are available on request, with the scope set out in the quotation. Fiber Laser or CO2 Laser: Which Technology Fits

In metal, fiber has taken over from CO2. Wall plug efficiency is far better. Nothing is consumed to make the beam itself, and with no mirrors in the beam path there is less to align and less to replace. Fiber is also quicker through thin and medium material, and it handles copper and brass, which were treated as problem materials on CO2 machines.
