Drill press, floor drill press or benchtop drill press: what the terms mean
US shops call this machine family a drill press. The formal name is column drilling machine, after the rigid column that guides the head. British and export catalogs often say pillar drill or bench drill for the same thing. Day to day, the useful split is by mounting: a benchtop drill press bolts to a workbench, a floor drill press stands on the shop floor. Manufacturers and buyers use all of these labels for the same basic machine.
Only one real technical line runs through this category, and that is against the radial arm drill press. On a radial machine the head swings out to the part. On a drill press the part is moved under a fixed spindle. Once parts get large or heavy enough that moving them is the bottleneck, the radial design is the right call.
Types: benchtop and floor drill presses

- Benchtop drill press: a compact machine mounted on a bench or base cabinet. Good for smaller hole diameters, repair work and one-off parts.
- Floor drill press: a heavier machine with more mass and more spindle power. It covers larger hole diameters, runs multiple shifts and usually adds a powered table height adjustment.
The same rule holds at every size. More mass means a steadier spindle and a cleaner hole. On a drill press, rigidity is not a comfort item. It is where the accuracy comes from.
Drive types: V-belt, variable speed and geared head
The drive sets the torque at the spindle and how freely you can change speed.
- V-belt drive: the classic, low-maintenance setup. You change speed by moving the belt to another pulley step. Rugged, affordable and plenty for most shop work.
- Variable speed inverter drive: a frequency inverter sets the spindle speed steplessly. This pays off when you switch materials and drill sizes often, and you dial it in right at the panel.
- Geared-head drill press: the muscle option. A gear train puts high torque at the spindle even at low rpm. This is the pick for large hole diameters, tough alloys and regular tapping.
Applications and industries
A drill press is baseline equipment in almost any metal shop. Where they earn their keep:
- Metal fabrication and steel work: holes in plate, structural shapes, flanges and tube.
- Maintenance shops: repairs, replacement parts and fit-up work while production keeps running.
- Machine building and production: repeat holes at consistent accuracy, often paired with tapping.
- Training: vocational programs and in-house apprentice shops, because the controls are easy to follow and the cutting basics stay visible.
Typical materials are steel, stainless, cast iron, aluminum and copper alloys. For harder-to-machine stock, choose a machine with strong low-speed torque and add coolant.
Technical features and equipment
These are the points that decide whether a machine fits your shop:
- Drilling capacity and spindle taper: the maximum hole diameter in steel, listed in inches, and the standard taper for chucks and taper-shank tooling.
- Quill travel and throat: they set your drilling depth and how far the spindle center sits from the column.
- Quill feed: manual, automatic or servo-driven. An automatic feed takes load off the operator and holds the feed rate steady.
- Depth stop: for repeat blind holes at the same depth without measuring every part.
- Tapping function: with forward and reverse, you tap on the machine without moving the part.
- Table adjustment: from a hand crank with rack and pinion up to powered height adjustment on the heavy sizes.
- Controls: several series use a touchscreen panel that sets and displays speed, feed and depth.
- Coolant: longer tool life and a better finish, especially in stainless.
Accessories for drill presses
Tooling often moves your cycle time more than the machine does. The usual list: a drill press vise and clamps for workholding, a cross-slide table for laying out hole patterns, drill chucks and taper sleeves for tool mounting, a drill chuck guard and chip shield, and a work light so you can actually see the hole.
