What a vertical bandsaw is
A vertical bandsaw runs the saw band vertically through a fixed worktable. The workpiece rests on the table and is guided by hand along the continuous band. This makes the vertical bandsaw a machine for contour cutting rather than for the pure cut-off. It cuts free contours, curves, radii and cutouts, while a horizontal bandsaw cuts tubes and profiles to length in a straight cut.
The vertical band run and the sturdy saw frame keep the band steady and give a clear view of the cutting line. That matters when guiding by hand, because the operator follows the marked contour. A narrow saw band takes tight radii, a wider band longer straight cuts.

Applications and industries
Vertical bandsaws are used wherever a shape is cut from solid rather than simply cut to length. In tool and mould making they cut contours and blanks, in metal fabrication they cut sheet, plate and blanks to shape. Typical materials are steel, stainless steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals.
Because the operation is easy to see and follow, vertical bandsaws also suit the workshop and the training environment. Cutting a workpiece to a marked line is straightforward to teach, without the need for elaborate programming.
Contour cutting: free shapes, radii and internal cutouts
The strength of the vertical bandsaw is the free cut. The operator guides the workpiece along the contour against the band and so cuts curves and radii that are not possible on a cut-off saw. The tilting table extends this to angled and bevel contours, because the workpiece rests at an angle to the band.
For closed internal cutouts the band welder is used: the saw band is threaded through a pre-drilled hole in the workpiece, welded again and then cuts the inner contour. This produces cutouts and openings without cutting in from the outside edge.
Materials and cutting capacity
Vertical bandsaws cut structural steel, stainless steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals. For a clean result the saw band, cutting speed and tooth pitch are matched to material and wall thickness. Soft materials call for a different band and speed than hardened steel.
The maximum workpiece size of a vertical bandsaw is described as height by throat depth: the height is the largest material thickness under the band guide, the throat depth the distance from the band to the machine column and thus the maximum depth of cut. Both figures set how large a workpiece may be. The specific cutting ranges of the individual sizes are stated in the product grid.
Equipment and operation
KNUTH's vertical bandsaws are built for contour cutting. Infinitely variable cutting speeds match the band to the material. The tilting table allows angled and bevel cuts, the band welder the closed internal cutouts. A minimum quantity lubrication system brings coolant to the cut in a targeted, sparing way, which is gentle on the saw band and improves cut quality.

Cut quality depends largely on the saw band. Narrow bands are chosen for tight radii and fine contours, wider bands for straight cuts. Matching saw blades and further accessories are part of our programme, suited to material and contour work.
