FAQ's

An industrial sawing machine cuts metal with a continuous saw band or a rotating circular blade. It brings tubes, profiles, shafts and plates to length and therefore usually stands at the start of the process chain, before turning, milling or welding. Compared with abrasive cutting it works with less material loss, less heat input and better dimensional accuracy.

The band saw runs a continuous saw band and covers large and changing cross sections flexibly, including mitre cuts and contours. The circular saw uses a rotating blade and is faster on smaller cross sections, with a clean cut face and little reworking. Cold saws work at low cutting speed and high torque, which keeps the material cool.

Five points decide it: the material, the largest cross section you have to cut, whether mitre cuts are needed, the number of cuts per day and the required cut quality. For one-offs and maintenance work a manual or semi-automatic machine is enough. If you run many identical cuts every day, an automatic sawing machine quickly pays for itself against the operator time saved. We go through the requirements with you.

On an automatic sawing machine the material feed, clamping and cut all run under control and the operator only sets up. It is worth it as soon as identical cuts come in batches or staff are short, because the machine works through several parts without intervention. Semi-automatic band saws are the middle path: the cut runs on its own, while clamping and feeding stay manual.

We do not supply a CNC saw with freely programmable path control, and cutting metal to length does not require one. The strongest automatic saws in the range work with an NC control: cut length, quantity and cutting sequence are programmed and repeated accurately. For freely programmable contour work, CNC milling machines or laser and plasma cutting machines are the right choice.

Mild and heat treated steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and non-ferrous metals can all be sawn, and with the right tool hardened and high alloy materials as well. Cutting speed, feed and the choice of saw band are what matter. Stainless steel needs a lower cutting speed than mild steel, aluminium a much higher one.

Tooth pitch follows wall thickness and cross section: coarse for solid material, fine for thin walled tubes and profiles. Bi-metal saw bands are the standard for steel, while carbide tipped bands and blades are used for hard materials and long tool life. We supply matching saw bands and circular saw blades for every machine.

Yes. Every machine is inspected with documentation and delivered CE-compliant. The declaration of conformity and the full documentation are supplied with the machine. That covers the requirements for operation in the EU, including internal health and safety assessments.

Yes. Manual and semi-automatic sawing machines suit training well, because apprentices experience clamping, cut guidance and machine safety for themselves. Robust construction and straightforward operation matter more here than a high level of automation. For training workshops we also put machines together as a complete package.

As a rule of thumb, the band saw is the all-rounder for large and changing cross sections. The circular saw wins on smaller sections, short cycle times and cut quality.

Levels of Automation: From Manual Saw to Automatic Sawing Machine

The level of automation matters more than the design. It sets how much operator time every cut costs.

  1. Manual: clamping, infeed and cut start are done by hand. Right for one-offs, maintenance and training.
  2. Semi-automatic: the cut runs on its own, clamping and feeding stay manual. The usual compromise in a workshop with mixed orders.
  3. Fully automatic: material feed, clamping and cutting run under control and the operator only sets up. Batches run with little labour.
  4. With NC control: the strongest automatic saws work with an NC control. Cut lengths, quantities and cutting sequences are programmed and repeated exactly.

A true CNC saw with freely programmable path control is not part of the range, and cutting metal to length does not require one. To judge the right level, start from the number of cuts per day, not the machine price.

Applications and Industries

Sawing machines for metal are found wherever material is cut to length. In mechanical and plant engineering, shafts, beams and tubes are prepared for machining. In metal fabrication and structural steelwork, profile and mitre cuts are daily business. In maintenance departments the saw has to do everything, from a repair sleeve to a replacement beam. Tooth pitch and band type decide the result: a coarse pitch for solid material, a fine pitch for thin walled tubes and profiles. Bi-metal saw bands are the standard for steel, carbide tipped bands and blades the answer for hard materials and long tool life. KNUTH supplies saw blades and saw bands to match the machine. The wider accessories range includes feed and outfeed roller conveyors, which hold long material safely and cut set-up time on an automatic saw.
