Industrial sawing machines cut metal economically, to size and with very little material loss. In most workshops they sit right at the start of the process chain, bringing tubes, profiles, shafts and plates to length before any further machining begins. Machine Types: Band Saws and Circular Saws
Four designs cover the range, each with a clear focus.
- Horizontal Mitre Cutting Bandsaws: the saw bow swivels, so angled and mitre cuts in tubes and profiles are possible without re-clamping. Double mitre versions swivel to both sides.
- Horizontal Straight Cutting Bandsaws: built for the straight cut, heavily constructed and set up for high cutting rates. The first choice when large cross sections are cut in volume.
- Vertical Bandsaws: the blade runs vertically and the workpiece is guided by hand. Contours and internal cut-outs are possible, because the blade is threaded through a drilled hole and rejoined on the machine welding unit. Common in tool and mould making.
- Circular Sawing Machines and Cold Saws: a rotating blade cuts quickly and leaves a clean cut face. Cold saws work at low cutting speed and high torque, so the material stays cool and needs hardly any reworking.
As a rule of thumb, the band saw is the all-rounder for large and changing cross sections. The circular saw wins on smaller sections, short cycle times and cut quality.
Levels of Automation: From Manual Saw to Automatic Sawing Machine
The level of automation matters more than the design. It sets how much operator time every cut costs.
- Manual: clamping, infeed and cut start are done by hand. Right for one-offs, maintenance and training.
- Semi-automatic: the cut runs on its own, clamping and feeding stay manual. The usual compromise in a workshop with mixed orders.
- Fully automatic: material feed, clamping and cutting run under control and the operator only sets up. Batches run with little labour.
- With NC control: the strongest automatic saws work with an NC control. Cut lengths, quantities and cutting sequences are programmed and repeated exactly.
A true CNC saw with freely programmable path control is not part of the range, and cutting metal to length does not require one. To judge the right level, start from the number of cuts per day, not the machine price.
Which Industrial Sawing Machine Suits Your Production
Five questions lead to the right machine.
- Material: mild steel, stainless steel, hardened material, cast iron, aluminium or non-ferrous metal. The material sets cutting speed and saw band.
- Cross section and profile: solid bar, tube or profile, and the largest section you have to cut. That decides the machine size.
- Mitre: are angled cuts needed, and to one side or to both.
- Quantity and throughput: single part, small batch or series. The level of automation follows from this.
- Accuracy and reworking: how clean the cut face has to be, and whether a further operation is planned anyway.

Applications and Industries
Sawing machines for metal are found wherever material is cut to length. In mechanical and plant engineering, shafts, beams and tubes are prepared for machining. In metal fabrication and structural steelwork, profile and mitre cuts are daily business. In maintenance departments the saw has to do everything, from a repair sleeve to a replacement beam. Saw Bands, Circular Saw Blades and Accessories
Tooth pitch and band type decide the result: a coarse pitch for solid material, a fine pitch for thin walled tubes and profiles. Bi-metal saw bands are the standard for steel, carbide tipped bands and blades the answer for hard materials and long tool life. KNUTH supplies saw blades and saw bands to match the machine. The wider accessories range includes feed and outfeed roller conveyors, which hold long material safely and cut set-up time on an automatic saw.
