A circular sawing machine parts tubes, profiles and solid stock with a rotating toothed blade. Unlike abrasive cutting the blade runs at low speed under coolant, so the workpiece stays cool and the cut edge comes out square and almost burr-free. Circular sawing machine, chop saw or bandsaw: the differences

Three machine types part metal, with very different results:

• Circular sawing machine or cold saw: toothed blade, low speed, coolant. A clean, near burr-free cut with little kerf loss. First choice for tubes, profiles and visible edges.
• Abrasive chop saw with a cutting disc: high speed, no coolant. Cheap to buy, but with sparks, heat input and rework. For site work and rough cut-offs.
• Bandsaw: a continuous saw band. Strong on large solid cross sections, long cuts and batch work with feed automation.

For workshop cutting of tube and profile the circular saw is usually quicker and leaves the better edge. Thick solid material and repeat batches with material feed belong on a bandsaw. The industrial sawing machines category gives an overview.

Manual or semi-automatic: which circular sawing machine fits

Circular sawing machines are told apart by how much of the cut the machine takes over. A manual circular sawing machine is fed by hand lever. The operator feels the cut and adapts the feed, so a changed job needs no setup. That suits one-offs, repair work and small batches. A semi-automatic circular sawing machine works with hydraulic feed and pneumatic clamping, and it pays off when the same length is wanted in quantity. The current KNUTH lineup here is manual. Materials and saw blades

The blade decides cut quality and tool life. Structural steel and general fabrication are usually cut with HSS blades. Stainless steel calls for a finer tooth pitch and a lower cutting speed. Non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, brass and copper want a different tooth geometry again. Thin-walled tube needs many teeth in the cut, solid stock few but strong ones. Technical features and machine sizes

Circular sawing machines differ above all in cutting capacity, meaning the largest cross section parted at square and on the mitre. Blade diameter, drive rating, cutting speed and equipment follow: coolant pump, material stop and base stand.
