What is an edge beveling machine?

An edge beveling machine mills an even bevel onto the edge of a workpiece. The process is also called chamfering or edge processing. A cutter head with several inserts removes material from the edge in a controlled way, so a clean bevel is produced at a constant angle and width. Edge beveling machines are used above all for weld seam preparation, for deburring and for breaking edges on plates, tubes and profiles.

Before welding, the edge has to be bevelled so the weld joins the parts reliably. That is exactly what the edge beveling machine is built for. Other typical jobs:

• Weld seam preparation: a defined bevel on the plate edge for a load-bearing welded joint.
• Deburring and edge breaking: safely removing sharp edges after cutting or flame cutting.
• Chamfering large parts: long profiles, wide plates and welded structures are worked directly on the part instead of moving them to a machine.

Types: hand-guided and stationary

• Hand-guided edge beveling machines are moved along the workpiece by hand. They are compact, ready to use straight away and ideal for large or heavy parts that are hard to move.
• Stationary edge beveling machines have a fixed set-up and suit repeat bevels on smaller parts at consistent quality.

Bevel angle, bevel width and bevel quality

The bevel angle and the bevel height decide the result. You set both to match the weld groove and the material thickness. Because the cutter head mills the edge rather than grinding it, the bevel stays even and repeatable over the full length. The milling action runs with low impact and low vibration, so the edge is clean and needs no rework.

Cutter head and indexable inserts

The tool of the edge beveling machine is a cutter head fitted with indexable inserts. The cutting edges are made of a hard carbide alloy and therefore reach long tool life. When a cutting edge is worn, you turn or change the insert instead of replacing the whole tool. That keeps running costs low and bevel quality constant.

Which materials and workpieces can be processed?

Edge beveling machines work the usual metals of metal fabrication: mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other materials. They bevel straight edges on plates, sheets, long profiles and welded structures. How thick the material and how large the part can be depends on the size of the machine.
