Column drilling machine, pillar drill or bench drill: the terms explained
Several names describe the same machine type: a stationary drilling machine whose drill head is guided on a solid column. The name usually follows the design. Column drilling machine refers to the load-bearing element, pillar drill is the everyday workshop term, and bench drill describes the smaller version bolted to a workbench. In North American catalogues the whole family appears as drill press or floor drill press. In practice, suppliers and buyers use the terms interchangeably.
Only one genuine technical distinction exists, and that is against the radial drilling machine. On a radial machine the drill head sits on a swivelling arm and travels to the workpiece. On a column drilling machine the workpiece is brought under a fixed spindle. For large and heavy fabricated parts, the radial design is therefore the right choice.
Designs: bench-mounted and floor-standing

- Bench-mounted design: compact machines for mounting on a workbench or base cabinet. Suited to smaller hole diameters, repair work and single parts.
- Floor-standing design: machines with a high dead weight and high spindle power. They cover larger hole diameters, run in multi-shift operation and usually offer a powered table height adjustment.
One rule applies across every size. The heavier a machine is built, the more steadily the spindle runs and the cleaner the hole becomes. In workshops that run long hours or sit far from the nearest service point, that built-in rigidity also means fewer adjustments and less rework.
Drive types: V-belt, inverter and geared-head drilling machine
The drive decides how much torque reaches the spindle and how flexibly you can adjust the speed.
- V-belt drive: the classic, low-maintenance solution. The speed is selected by moving the belt onto a different pulley step. Robust, economical and simple to service with basic workshop tools.
- Stepless inverter drive: a frequency inverter controls the spindle speed infinitely. This is an advantage where materials and hole diameters change often, and it allows fine adjustment directly at the control panel.
- Geared-head drilling machine with gearbox: the power option. A gear train transmits high torque even at low speeds. This is the right choice for large hole diameters, tough materials and regular tapping, which is why heavy engineering and mining workshops usually specify it.
Applications and industries
Column drilling machines and pillar drills belong to the basic equipment of almost every metalworking workshop. Typical fields of use across the region:
- Mining and heavy engineering: repair and fabrication work on plant components, wear parts and structures.
- Oil and gas: holes and threads in flanges, brackets and fabricated assemblies.
- Metal fabrication and steel construction: holes in sheet, sections, flanges and tubes.
- Maintenance and in-house workshops: repairs, spare part production and adaptation work during ongoing operation.
- Training: training workshops and technical colleges, because the machines are manageable to operate and make the basics of metal cutting visible.
Materials worked include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and non-ferrous metals. For hard-to-machine materials, choose a machine with high torque in the lower speed range and add a coolant system.
Technical features and equipment
These features decide in practice whether a machine fits your operation:
- Drilling capacity and spindle mount: the maximum hole diameter in steel and the standardised tool mount for drill chucks and taper tooling.
- Quill stroke and throat: they set the drilling depth and the largest distance between spindle axis and column.
- Quill feed: manual, automatic or servo-controlled. An automatic feed relieves the operator and keeps the feed rate constant.
- Tapping facility: with forward and reverse rotation, threads can be cut on the machine without reclamping.
- Table adjustment: from a hand crank with rack and pinion through to powered height adjustment on the heavy sizes.
- Operation: several series work with a touchscreen panel that sets and displays speed, feed and drilling depth.
- Coolant system: extends tool life and improves surface quality, especially in stainless steel.
Accessories for column drilling machines and pillar drills
The right accessories often do more for your throughput than the machine itself. Common items are machine vices and clamping claws for secure workholding, cross-slide tables for positioning hole patterns exactly, drill chucks and taper sleeves as tool mounts, drill chuck guards and swarf guards for safe operation, and work lights for a clearly lit drilling area.
