Workshop presses for maintenance and assembly

The workshop press is part of the basic equipment in every repair and maintenance shop. It produces the force that hand tools no longer manage: pressing bearings, bushes and shafts in and out, straightening bent parts and handling general assembly work. The welded, double H-frame stands up to high pressure loads, and the height-adjustable support sets the working height to the workpiece. Frame and drive: manual or motorised

Workshop presses from KNUTH work hydraulically in a sturdy H-frame. The drive sets the speed and the operation:

• Manual workshop press: a hand pump builds the pressure through a hand lever. The design is rugged, low-maintenance and independent of the mains. It suits the workshop with occasional pressing work and smaller press forces.
• Motorised workshop press: a hydraulic power unit takes over the pressure build-up. That takes strain off the operator, speeds up recurring work and reaches higher press forces. These series suit maintenance with high throughput and heavy industrial use.

Workpieces are positioned under the hydraulic cylinder in purpose-made fixtures. The press force, working width and stroke of the machines currently available appear in the product cards above.

Applications in the workshop and maintenance

With the matching fixture a workshop press takes on a wide range of work:

• Pressing in and out bearings, bushes, silent blocks and pins
• Straightening bent shafts, axles and sections
• Assembly and disassembly of press and shrink fits
• Forming and bending smaller parts with the matching tooling
• Bending sheet with a bending attachment

Typical settings are mining, oil and gas and heavy engineering, plus general fabrication and fitting and repair shops. For industrial forming and series production, hydraulic presses are the right design.

Choosing the right press force and size

The press force is the most important selection criterion. It follows the heaviest job, not the most frequent one, and it moves the price more than anything else because frame, cylinder and pump all scale with it. Small workshop presses cover the range of a few tonnes, while large sizes reach up into triple-digit tonnage. Besides the tonnage, the working width between the uprights, the adjustable table for the working height and the stroke of the cylinder decide which workpieces fit. Technical equipment and safety

The range of functions grows with the size. Common equipment features are:

• Pressure gauge to show the applied pressure and guard against overload
• Infinitely adjustable pressing pressure for metered, controlled work
• Height-adjustable support and table for different workpiece and working heights
• Anti-rotation device on the piston for a straight application of force
