This is how KNUTH impressed:
A comprehensive range of proven training machines
Machines with high stability and intuitive controls
Expert guidance paired with outstanding service
Fifteen KNUTH machines are in use in the new training workshop of thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems GmbH (tkMSS) in Oberhausen (Germany), ranging from universal lathes and multifunctional milling machines to special-purpose machines. “Since 35 apprentices spend six to seven hours a day, four to five days a week learning on the machines, good build quality and stability were very important to us,” explains Cahit Kaan Akyüz, trainer at tkMSS. “In addition, the training machines needed to operate reliably even if minor operating errors occur.”
“Thanks to KNUTH’s robust machines, our training program has made a huge leap forward.”
Cahit Kaan Akyüz, trainer at thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems
Founded in 2008 through the merger of several thyssenkrupp Group companies, tkMSS employs around 1,700 people and provides a wide range of services to the steel-producing industry, as well as to lime plants, the automotive sector, and the food industry in Germany and abroad. The company’s core business is processing slag, a by-product of steel production commonly used in road construction. tkMSS places particular emphasis on tailored solutions developed in close collaboration with customers to meet their specific requirements.
In 2023, the company decided to take greater responsibility for training again in-house. The goal was to train industrial and construction mechanics entirely in-house in accordance with the framework training curriculum. “For this, we were looking for a broad range of machine tools – ideally robust and from a single supplier,” Akyüz recalls.
He received the recommendation for KNUTH from a colleague in another
business unit who had already gained positive experience with large lathes,
radial drilling machines, and milling machines. “At our in-house exhibition,
we had ample opportunity to demonstrate various conventional models live
and to configure a complete package directly on site,” reports Dogukan Kilic,
sales representative at KNUTH. Both conventional and CNC-controlled KNUTH machines have already proven themselves in many training workshops and inspire young people with their intuitive operation. “Our machines are compact and clearly laid out, and fully equipped to meet the requirements of training,” explains Kilic. “They allow all fundamental training tasks, including standard setup procedures, to be practiced and refined.” All machines are easy to maintain and come with ISO certifications and comprehensive operating manuals. Cahit Kaan Akyüz also consulted the TDE Training and Continuing Education Center near Leipzig, which has set up a training and examination line using KNUTH machines. “The strong references, robust machines, and competent advice convinced us,” he explains.
Until the 800 qm training center was completed, KNUTH stored the ordered lathes and milling machines, plate rolling and swivel bending machines,
as well as guillotine shears and a band saw. In spring 2024, KNUTH service technicians installed the machines and provided on-site training for the trainers on each machine type. The inauguration on July 1, 2024, attended by
numerous guests such as the HR representative of tkMSS, the employers’ association, and members of the press, sent an important signal to the
region that the company is investing in people’s futures at this location, providing in-house training, and maintaining a high retention rate.
Apprentices at tkMSS start by gaining an in-depth understanding of materials
and their properties. They are meant to develop a feel for them and understand
why a particular type of steel must be machined in a specific way and
with specific tools. “We start with simple exercises covering the basics of metalworking before moving on to the conventional machines,” explains Akyüz.
On these machines, apprentices then produce small practice workpieces from
easily machinable structural steel and occasionally stainless steel to improve
their tactile skills. “This is an important foundation for later being able to optimize cutting conditions on CNC machines and produce with high quality,” notes Dogukan Kilic. The KNUTH machines have proven themselves well at tkMSS and have already been supplemented by a column drill and three bench drilling machines. Akyuz notes: “Thanks to KNUTH’s robust machines, our training program has made a huge leap forward.” And with a maintenance contract in place, they will remain operational for many years to come.
