Lathe Machines

Turning is one of the most versatile metal-cutting processes in any workshop. It covers everything from component manufacturing and toolmaking to repair work and technical training. KNUTH offers a broad range of lathes for exactly these requirements. Conventional lathes suit single parts, repairs and vocational training. CNC slant-bed lathes handle repeat production and complex geometries, with modern Siemens and Fagor controls. For every machine, KNUTH supplies the matching accessories: chucks,...

FAQ's

A lathe machine is a metal-cutting tool that rotates a workpiece against a stationary cutting tool to produce cylindrical shapes such as shafts, spindles, bushings, and threaded components. Lathes are used across automotive, aerospace, medical device, and general manufacturing applications.

KNUTH offers conventional engine lathes, heavy-duty lathes with turning diameters up to 2,600 mm, CNC slant-bed lathes, cycle-controlled lathes, and conventional vertical lathes. All machine types are available with a full range of compatible accessories.

A CNC lathe is a computer-numerically controlled machine tool that automatically executes programmed operations such as turning, threading, facing, and boring. CNC lathes produce consistent, repeatable results and are used for series production of cylindrical components.

A conventional lathe requires a trained operator to manually control all cutting movements, making it flexible for one-off parts and repairs. A CNC lathe runs on programmed instructions, which increases output speed, dimensional consistency, and suitability for series production.

Turning diameter, also called swing over bed, is the largest workpiece diameter that can rotate above the lathe bed without contact. A lathe with a turning diameter of 400 mm can machine cylindrical parts up to 400 mm in diameter.

Center width is the maximum distance between the headstock and tailstock, which defines the longest workpiece that can be machined. KNUTH lathes offer center widths from 810 mm on compact bench models up to 8,000 mm on heavy-duty machines.

The right lathe depends on turning diameter, center width, and your production type. For repair and maintenance work, a conventional lathe with a long center width offers the most flexibility; for series production of cylindrical parts, a CNC lathe reduces cycle times and ensures consistent results across batches.

Compact conventional lathes are the standard starting point in vocational training, as they build practical understanding of the turning process before advancing to CNC. KNUTH also offers purpose-built training lathes, including the LabTurn CNC, for programmes that include CNC machine operation from the start.

KNUTH CNC lathes are available with Siemens, Fanuc, and Fagor control systems. The control type is specified on each individual product page.

Yes. KNUTH offers machine start-up services, maintenance contracts, on-site repairs, and spare parts for all lathe types in the product range. Service requests can be submitted directly through the KNUTH website.

Lathes and CNC Lathes for Every Workshop

A lathe rotates a workpiece against a stationary cutting tool to produce cylindrical shapes such as shafts, spindles, bushings and threaded components. With the right tooling, it also produces complex contours, internal bores and faced surfaces to tight tolerances. Whether for industrial production runs, repair work or a training workshop, KNUTH offers a lathe to match the task.

Turning comes down to two basic movements. Longitudinal turning removes material along the workpiece axis and creates the outer form. Facing works across the axis and creates flat end surfaces. Modern machines combine both operations across several axes. That makes turning one of the most versatile processes in any workshop.

Types of Lathe

The range runs from compact conventional machines to fully automated CNC lathes. The right type depends on your parts, your batch sizes and your operators.

Key Specifications Compared

When comparing lathes, a few figures decide whether a machine suits your work:

The KNUTH product pages list these figures for every model, so you can match a machine to your tolerances and your floor space before you enquire.

Lathe Accessories and Tooling

The right accessories determine how precisely and efficiently a lathe performs. Chucks hold the workpiece: three-jaw chucks for round stock, four-jaw chucks for off-centre clamping, collet chucks for the tightest tolerances. Tool holders and quick-change toolposts cut setup time, and boring bars handle internal work. Steady rests and follow rests support long workpieces against deflection. KNUTH advises on the right accessory package, so you do not pay for capacity you will not use.

Industrial Applications

Lathes are central to almost every manufacturing sector:

Why KNUTH

KNUTH has supplied machine tools to metalworking businesses worldwide since 1923. Our machines are built for daily use in demanding environments, with a focus on long-term reliability, easy maintenance and consistent performance. Every machine is quality-tested in Germany to European standards. That gives you European quality and compliance without the European price. With service locations and a spare parts inventory, we deliver quickly and support your machine across its full life.

Comprehensive Service: Commissioning, Training, Repair

We support you through the installation and commissioning of your new lathe and train your team on its operation. On-site commissioning covers installation, levelling, electrical connection, initial calibration and a spindle runout check. Our technical support and repair service covers every machine category in the KNUTH range. For CNC machines we offer remote maintenance through the control manufacturer's module. Our large spare parts inventory ships most components quickly, including for older machines.
