A time-lapse video showing the installation of a KNUTH VDM 1600 S vertical lathe – from delivery to full production readiness in just eight days.

At a glance

  • Project: Installation of the VDM 1600 S vertical turning machine (vertical lathe)
  • Duration: 8 days (compressed into a 2-minute video)
  • Challenge: Precise installation of a large-scale machine with minimal production downtime
  • Result: Turnkey handover for immediate heavy-duty machining operations

The challenge: Machining large parts without long lead times

Investing in a large-scale machine such as a vertical lathe often involves significant logistical effort. A system over 6.5 meters high and weighing several tons must not only be delivered into the facility, but also precisely aligned down to the millimeter to ensure maximum accuracy in machining large-diameter workpieces from day one. Long downtimes during installation can result in considerable productivity losses.

The solution: Structured full-service installation by KNUTH

To ensure the fastest possible production start, KNUTH Service handles the complete installation process. Experience, precision and careful planning are key to a smooth and efficient setup.

In our new time-lapse video, we show how this complex process is carried out:

The construction takes place in three specific phases:

1. Foundation and Alignment

First, the central components – the heavy rotary table and the massive machine column – are positioned and precisely leveled. This forms the foundation for the machine’s subsequent dimensional accuracy.

2. Assembly of the Machine Structure

The remaining components are integrated step by step. The machine gradually takes on its vertical structure and reaches its stable final form.

3. Final Adjustment and Handover

In the final step, the VDM 1600 S is fully set up both electrically and mechanically and prepared for final acceptance by the customer.

The result: Immediate production readiness for heavy industry

After just eight days of installation, the machine is ready for production. For the customer, this means that machining of large and heavy components can begin immediately. The combination of a stable structure and a high-performance drive ensures reliable machining, even for demanding materials in heavy-duty applications.
