Conventional Grinding Machines

Conventional grinding machines work metal parts to high precision, from surface and flat grinding to internal and external cylindrical grinding. KNUTH offers a coordinated range of surface grinding machines and cylindrical grinding machines in several sizes. Conventional models with manual operation suit individual parts, repairs and training. Servo-conventional versions with NC-controlled cycles and a Siemens HMI speed up recurring tasks. FAQ's

A conventional grinding machine works metal workpieces with a rotating grinding wheel and is set up and operated manually. It produces accurate dimensions, flat surfaces and fine finishes. Typical designs are cylindrical grinding machines for round parts and surface grinding machines for level workpieces.

Conventional grinding machines are operated manually and are quick to get running, ideal for individual parts, repairs and training. CNC grinding machines work under program control and pay off for automated series with complex contours. In between are servo-conventional machines, which support the operator with NC-controlled cycles.

In cylindrical grinding a rotating, mostly round workpiece is machined on the outside or inside, such as shafts, bolts and bores. In surface grinding a level surface is machined, for example plates, guides or components. KNUTH offers suitable machines for both tasks.

That depends on your workpieces and batch sizes. For round parts, cylindrical grinding machines are suitable; for level surfaces, surface grinding machines. For recurring tasks, servo-conventional models with NC cycles help. Our specialists advise you and recommend the right size.

When set up carefully, conventional grinding machines reach tight dimensional tolerances and fine surface finishes that are hard to achieve by milling or turning. The specific values depend on the machine, grinding wheel, material and cooling. Ask for the right machine for your requirement.

Depending on the material, different wheels are used: aluminium oxide (corundum) for standard steel, CBN for hardened materials and diamond for particularly hard materials. For a consistent result, regular dressing of the wheel and sufficient cooling are important.

Mainly steel, hardened steel, stainless steel and cast iron. Grinding is especially worthwhile when workpieces are hardened or when very tight tolerances and high surface finishes are required, for example in precision manufacturing and tool and die making.

The range includes servo-conventional cylindrical grinding machines with NC-controlled cycles as well as surface grinding machines with a Siemens HMI and automatically controlled axes. KNUTH supplies new machines with warranty and service. For regular use, a new machine is usually the more economical choice than a used one with unknown wear.

Many machines are available from stock at short notice. The exact delivery time depends on the model and equipment. Ask about availability for your preferred machine directly.

Yes. We advise on the machine, grinding wheels and accessories, handle commissioning and training, and offer repair and spare parts service for the entire range. That keeps your machine ready for operation over the long term.

Conventional grinding machines for precise metalworking

Conventional grinding machines are among the proven machine tools for the fine machining of metal. They produce accurate dimensions, flat surfaces and high surface finishes that are hard to reach with other methods. KNUTH offers a coordinated programme of surface grinding machines and cylindrical grinding machines, from the compact workshop machine to the larger travelling column design.

Designs: cylindrical grinding and surface grinding

The two main designs cover the most common grinding tasks in the metal workshop:

Both designs reach tight tolerances and fine surfaces when set up carefully. You will find the specific grinding ranges and equipment of the currently available machines in the product cards above.

Conventional, NC-assisted or CNC?

Conventional grinding machines are set up and operated manually. That makes them quick to get running, straightforward and ideal for individual parts, repairs and training. Several models in the KNUTH programme are servo-conventional: they support the operator with NC-controlled cycles and a Siemens HMI, without the effort of full CNC programming. For fully automated series production with complex contours, CNC grinding machines are the right choice. Which solution fits depends on batch size, the range of parts and the operating concept.

Typical applications

Materials and grinding wheels

Conventional grinding machines mainly work steel, hardened steel, stainless steel and cast iron. You control the result through the right grinding wheel: aluminium oxide (corundum) for standard steel, CBN for hardened materials and diamond for particularly hard materials. For a consistent finish, regular dressing of the wheel and sufficient cooling are decisive.

Advantages of conventional grinding machines

Who benefits from the machine?

A dedicated conventional grinding machine pays off wherever dimensions and surfaces have to be right: in precision manufacturing, tool and die making, maintenance and training workshops. It brings fine machining in house, shortens throughput times and makes you independent of external grinding services.
