Conventional grinding machines are among the proven machine tools for the fine machining of metal. Designs: cylindrical grinding and surface grinding

The two main designs cover the most common grinding tasks in the metal workshop:

• Cylindrical grinding machines: for internal and external machining of rotationally symmetrical parts such as shafts, bolts and bushes. Available with manual feed, with automatic feed on the cross axis and as a servo-conventional version with NC-controlled cycles.
• Surface grinding machines: for the surface and flat grinding of level workpieces. From the machine with standard functions to the precision surface grinder with automatic dressing cycles, a Siemens HMI and an automatically controlled Z axis.

Conventional, NC-assisted or CNC?

Conventional grinding machines are set up and operated manually. That makes them quick to get running, straightforward and ideal for individual parts, repairs and training. Several models in the KNUTH programme are servo-conventional: they support the operator with NC-controlled cycles and a Siemens HMI, without the effort of full CNC programming. For fully automated series production with complex contours, CNC grinding machines are the right choice. Which solution fits depends on batch size, the range of parts and the operating concept.

Materials and grinding wheels

Conventional grinding machines mainly work steel, hardened steel, stainless steel and cast iron. You control the result through the right grinding wheel: aluminium oxide (corundum) for standard steel, CBN for hardened materials and diamond for particularly hard materials. For a consistent finish, regular dressing of the wheel and sufficient cooling are decisive.
